Understanding How Ayurveda Can Truly Enhance Quality Of Your Life

Do you know sipping a hot cuppa of Jasmine tea can help in healing your wounds? Ayurveda, the ancient science of life has silently returned to our lives in some way or the other. But not knowing the principals of this science and applying in our daily life is not a healthy way of living.

Ayurveda believes that every human body has a specific constitution or ‘prakruti’ that determines his vulnerability to disease and his nature. Essentially our diets should be in sync with our body type, and this will determine if we can be full of energy or lethargic and run-down by our daily chores. An additional benefit that the Ayurveda practitioners enjoy is the calm of mind. They can concentrate better, sleep better and feel less anxious overall.

Here is a general understanding of three main body types and personality characteristics, otherwise known as doshas.

  1. Vata: Thin and slim figured persons who are creative and full of joy and enthusiasm, are impulsive and have dry skin and perspire less.
  2. Pitta: Medium physique, well-built, has a sharp mind, self-confident, competitive but aggressive, uncomfortable in the sun, physical problems include acid reflux, insomnia etc.
  3. Kapha: Easy going, slow-paced, affectionate and non-judgemental in nature, slower to learn but outstanding long term memory, tends to get overweight, may suffer from depression and physical problems include asthma, allergies, hardening of the arteries.

How Vatas can stay balanced

  • Minimize travel as much as possible. Stay clear from loud and noisy places and crowds.
  • Find time for rest and get enough sleep.
  • Warm milk, soups, stews, butter, hot cereals, raw nuts, and freshly baked bread are good for Vatas.
  • Avoid drinks with too much caffeine and cold salads, raw veggies, pears and pomegranates.

How Pitta can stay balanced

  • Pittas are blessed with efficient metabolism, and they can generally eat just about everything.
  • Choose cooler times of day to perform physical exercise. Avoid getting out in excessive heat, or humidity and keep yourself hydrated.
  • Herbal tea, specifically mint or liquorice root tea, are pacifying to Pittas.
  • Avoid oily, salty, hot and heavy foods and skip food items like egg yolk, nuts, hot spices, honey and sour fruits like green grapes, oranges, pineapple.

How Kapha can stay balanced

  • People who belong to Kapha body type should wake early (before dawn), sleep less, and avoid sleeping during the day.
  • Breakaway from clinging to old memories, habits and sedentary lifestyle.
  • Foods such as romaine lettuce, tonic water, are suitable for stimulating the Kapha appetite, while preferred spices are cumin, fenugreek and turmeric.
  • Try to avoid hot cereals and steamed grains, in general, as they are too moist and heavy for Kaphas.

Ayurveda is an all-encompassing wellness plan designed to bring true transformation to every aspect of your life.
